America's Governor Ron DeSantis, who is also Flordia's Governor, has entered the girls' swimming chat. On Tuesday, he signed a proclamation acknowledging Emma Weyant as the rightful winner of the NCAA Division 1 Women's 500m freestyle. Weyant had finished second place behind Lia Thomas.

There's been a push to declare Weyant the winner due to the controversy surrounding Lia Thomas. Thomas currently competes as a woman. However, there are some who feel that because she was born a male, went through puberty as a male, and competed as a male, it gives her an unfair advantage to now compete as a woman. There was a whole thing about it last week. The media and activists say that's transphobic. People who believe in science and some of the female competitors who feel they were cheated and robbed of lifetime opportunities disagree.

Weyant only lost by 1.5 seconds in the 500m. It was her fastest time ever and the third fastest in the history of the University of Virginia.

DeSantis signed the Fairness in Women's Sports Act in June. It is on these grounds that DeSantis signed today's proclamation. Also, on the grounds of basic fairness.

"[Emma has] been an absolute superstar her whole career, to compete at that level is very, very difficult. You don't just roll out of bed and do it. That takes grit, that takes determination [...] and she had the fastest time of any woman in college athletics. [...] If the NCAA was willing to actually ensure the integrity of women's competition, she would have been crowned national champion. She earned that. We need to honor that appropriately."

In making the proclamation, DeSantis expressed that "by allowing men to compete in women's sports, the NCAA is destroying opportunities for women, making a mockery of its championships, and perpetuating a fraud." Sarasota's Emma Weyant is the best women's swimmer in the 500m. So it is proclaimed.

People who have been most vocal in defending Lia Thomas also tend to be the same people who overreact when Ron DeSantis does... well, much of anything. The response to this will prove to be interesting.
