The debate between allowing transgender women (who used to be biological men) to compete against cisgender women (who are still biological women) has grown contentious. One side points to science and how people born "male" are born with different attributes than people born "female" which gives the former group an advantage in certain athletic competitions. Also, when it comes to high school and college sports, there are some who feel that unfair advantage robs girls who were born female of valuable opportunities. In opposition, the other side thinks anyone who thinks that way is a transphobe.

It is only an issue with biological men competing against biological women. There hasn't been much in the way of transgender men (who were born biological women) competing against biological men.

Lia's brave journey follows the path of another trans athlete, New Zealand powerlifter Laurel Hubbard. Both competed in the same sports when they were their previous gender, as well. When Lia was Will, Will swam and was ranked #462 out of all other male swimmers. In 2018, Will started questioning her gender. She has since transitioned to a woman and is #1 in America. Laurel used to be powerlifter Gavin Hubbard. Gavin never ranked that high, either, but after Gavin transitioned to Laurel she started breaking all the female records. Laurel shattered the glass ceiling becoming the first transgender powerlifter to compete in the Olympics. Unfortunately, she also shattered a glass ceiling becoming the first transgender powerlifter to lose at the Olympics. At least Lia is a winner.

Some of Lia's teammates have spoken out, under the condition of anonymity, saying they view Lia competing as a woman as unfair. They also don't like that she, allegedly, walks around with her female genitalia hanging out. The feeling is that if they speak out publically, they will be cyberbullied by the media and pro-trans activists.

This debate shows no signs of being resolved in the near future, as more states pass legislation to level the playfield and create fairness in women's sports, and as opponents of those bills label anyone who supports them is transphobic. While the debate rages on, the sky is the limit for Lia Thomas.
