ESPN Host Goes On White-Privilege Rant Against Tim Tebow, Compares Him to George Floyd
Tim Tebow signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars today. You knew the hot takes would be scorchers. Stephen A. Smith's will melt your face off. Smith manages to undermine his argument before making his argument. Then, as part of his argument, compares anger over a mediocre football star getting a job to anger over GEORGE FLOYD. It's an impressive Socratic dialogue.
I start the video about two minutes in. If you care about Max Kellerman virtue-signaling about Colin Kaepernick, start it from the beginning.
First Take reacts to the Jaguars officially signing Tim Tebow as a tight end youtu.be
I texted Tim Tebow a couple of weeks ago, and I told him that if anybody deserves something along this line, it's him. ... I'm happy for him.
K. So, before, Smith says Tebow deserves the job. He also says Tim Tebow only gets the job because of Jaguars Coach Urban Meyer, Tebow's former college coach. Tebow could have gotten hired by an NFL team for the past five or six years because of his whiteness. He only got this job because Tebow's former coach is coaching a pro team now. We've established Smith thinks Tebow deserves the job and why he got the job. But somehow, this is all white privilege anyhow.
Then the George Floyd part.
When George Floyd ultimately was murdered by Derek Chauvin the cop, and you saw people rioting and protesting in the streets, it wasn't just about him. It was about the symbolism of what transpired. Because black people have repeatedly felt like we have the proverbial knee on our neck. We constantly have to scratch and claw our way. And when we see someone, of a different ilk, of a different ethnicity, getting opportunities we know we would never get, that's where the words "white privilege" come from.
In a little over three minutes, he went from saying he has a problem with Tim Tebow getting signed, to saying he told Tim Tebow that Tebow deserved to get signed, to explaining the one and only NOT RACIAL reason Tebow was getting signed ... to saying black people upset at Tebow is identical to black people being upset over George Floyd. Smith is upset at Tebow getting a job Smith thinks Tebow deserves because George Floyd was a thing.
Tebow getting another opportunity is simple. The Jacksonville Jaguars are the worst team in football. Sure, they're trying to rebuild with Trevor Lawrence. But until they do better than 1-17, they su-diddly-uck. Tim Tebow is still insanely popular in Florida. He has a personal relationship with the Jaguars' new coach. If there were an African American former Heisman trophy winner who fit this unique and specific situation, he'd get the job as well. Tebow getting the job isn't white privilege. It's "not being a dick" privilege.
The team has nothing to lose by giving Tebow a shot. If he doesn't work out, they'll cut him. If Tim Tebow is good at anything, it's being fired for lackluster performances.
