Hero Jumps Out Second Floor of Burning House, Saves Five People: 'Right Place, Right Time, I Guess'
The word hero is thrown around too much these days. And then there are people who are supposed to be heroes when called upon and end up being chickensh*t. Nick Bostic was just a guy driving down the street when he felt compelled to be a real hero.
According to the Daily Mail, the 25-year-old from Lafayette, Indiana, was driving down the road just after midnight when he spotted the porch of a house on fire, and as he told Fox 59, "I saw the fire on the balcony so I slammed on the brakes, pulled in the driveway, and ran into the house from the back."
Bostic proceeded to yell for anyone who might have been in the house. An 18-year-old woman and three of her siblings came down the stairs after being woken up, but there was one sibling missing. He ran into the house to look for the six-year-old, who he eventually found before having to run upstairs to escape the flames. Finding a window on the second floor, he broke through the glass and leaped with the child to the ground. Bodycam footage shows the moment he came upon first responders, holding the child, gasping for air, and bleeding from his right arm.
Bostic reportedly suffered injuries to his back, right arm, and ankle during the daring rescue, and was evacuated to the hospital where he was put on a ventilator for smoke inhalation.
Police said in a statement, "His selflessness during this incident is inspiring, and he has impressed many with his courage, tenacity, and steadfast calmness in the face of such perilous danger."
Bostic, however, simply says, "I was at the right place, the right time, and, I guess, the right person."
"If it were me up there trapped, or asleep and there was a fire, I’d be hoping that the guy driving would consider doing the same if they were able to."
The thing is, most people wouldn't have been so quick to jump into such a situation. That's what makes this so amazing. A GoFundMe has been set up to raise money to pay for Bostic's medical bills.
