Collge swimmer Riley Gaines tied Lia Thomas in the 200m last month. As she was going to stand and accept her trophy, she was told by the NCAA they only had one and they decided to let Lia hold it. Lia Thomas was the competitor all the media attention was on. Lia shattered a glass ceiling this year being the first person to compete as a woman after previously competing as a man and while still having a penis. All the other female swimmers were pushed aside in favor of Lia. Though none were as embarrassed as Gaines.

LwC reported on this last month. Thomas tied with Gaines of the University of Kentucky during the 200m freestyle. When the competitors prepared to take possession of their trophies and go to the podium, officials from the NCAA gave the 5th place trophy to Thomas. Gaines was told "yours will be coming in the mail. We went ahead and gave the fifth-place trophy to Lia, but you can pose on the podium with the sixth-place trophy.”

Riley tells Tucker Carlson the NCAA handled it poorly (an understatement) and described what it was like backstage when it happened.

"I was shocked, and I know all the other swimmers who were standing by and listening to this were also shocked. And I was standing right next to Lia, and she heard it all. [...] they protected such a small minority and turned their back on what the organization and Title IX really stand for."

The debate over allowing people who were biologically born men to unfairly compete against those biologically born women shows no signs of ending anytime soon. I just ask people defending Lia Thomas to show empathy for competitors like Riley Gaines and the others who felt slighted, robbed, and cheated this year. They could have easily been your daughter.
