Charles Berry, a teacher in New York City, believes he has got a million-dollar idea: Make it unlawful for corporations to move their businesses elsewhere. According to him, the city and state need those taxes, and people need jobs; therefore, the government must take control of these entities
Appearing on The Nate Friedman Show, Berry claims he believes billionaires who have left or are planning to leave due to high taxes should not be allowed to move their operations to Florida or other low-tax states, and even went as far as to claim it should be unlawful to abandon the people of New York City.
The problem with this, however, is that it would not only be an unlawful eminent domain, but it would also be slavery. It turns out that making people work against their will, while demanding the fruits of those labors benefit other people, is not lawful in this country. But considering it was the left who fought so hard to keep slavery in this country during the Civil War, it is not surprising that it is a leftist who is de facto defending that practice today. Weird how that works out.
Many leftist states have been losing businesses and residents for several years now, as progressive tax rates and policies make it “uninvestable” and asinine to reside there for many people.
According to The Heritage Foundation:
Businessman and investor Kevin O’Leary recently described states such as New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and California as “uninvestable” with “insane” policies and taxes that are too high. O’Leary is not alone in his assessment. These states consistently rank at or near the bottom of the annual Chief Executive survey of the best and worst states for business. state and local income tax rates in California, New York, and New Jersey are two to three times higher than in most other states. In addition, these states have high regulatory burdens, high production costs, and a high risk of litigation.
Business migration out of these states is a common occurrence. California, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts are all in the top five of U.S. states losing population to interstate migration.
The worst part is not how painfully naive Berry is, or that he has zero understanding of how the economy or economics works, but that he is tasked with educating the next generation. This nation's students deserve so much better than some imbecile pretending he understands economics, all because he came up with a concept of an idea in his imagination. Fortunately, though, most voters are not as dumb as him. And far more people will mock his understanding, or lack thereof, of the economy, than “learn” from it.
