Representative Nancy Mace has proposed a constitutional amendment to prevent non-native-born citizens from doing some things. Is she on to something? Today’s show breaks it down.
According to The Hill, Mace “is proposing a constitutional amendment that would prohibit naturalized U.S. citizens from serving in Congress, becoming federal judges, or holding Senate-confirmed positions.”
“There is a reason for this.” Gerald A said. “In the 119th Congress, that would affect 17 people in the House and two in the Senate,” adding that “even if it hurts” Conservatives, it is “still the right thing to do.”
In a Wednesday statement shared to the social platform X, Mace said she introduced a “long overdue joint resolution” for the constitutional amendment, noting, “This is the very same standard the President and Vice President are already required to meet.”
“We have been talking about this even before Nancy put this out. I think it is an attention grab for her, I don't think she is serious about it, I don't think she is the right person to get this done, but it is a good policy,” Gerald A said.
The South Carolina Republican, who is running for governor in the Palmetto State, suggested U.S. officials born in other countries could have divided loyalties.
“The people writing America’s laws, confirming America’s judges, and representing America on the world stage should have one loyalty: America,” Mace wrote in her post. “Not any other country.”
In one specific example as to why this should not be controversial, Ana C. Reyes, an immigrant from Uruguay who is openly LGBTQ, was appointed by Biden to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Ironically, she “blocked President Donald Trump’s ban on transgender service members” and “said the administration cannot enforce the ban,” according to CNN.
In another example, Araceli Martinez-Olguin, who was appointed by Biden to the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, “issued a temporary restraining order, blocking the administration from cutting off funding that advocates said was crucial to ensuring that 26,000 children could keep their attorneys.”
“It is not anti-immigrant,” Gerald A said. “It is saying if you come to this country and you want to serve in these positions, that is fantastic, but let us make sure you have a little experience first in what it means to be American,” adding that, “We should not let people like this write our laws and dictate our policy,” Gerald A said.
