‘Stop Dancing to Them Records’: R&B Star Ne-Yo Takes a Stand Against Misogyny, But Women Aren’t Happy
I can’t remember the last time I heard a Ne-Yo song, and I couldn’t tell you the title of a single one and definitely not a single lyric. But Ne-Yo decided to take a pretty logical stance on modern misogyny that it would be worthwhile for some people—especially ladies—to hear.
Appearing on “The Cruz Show,” a radio program in Los Angeles (which I am pretty sure has nothing to do with Ted Cruz), Ne-Yo dropped one helluva truth bomb on people, splitting the blame equally between men and women for the existence of misogyny in modern culture, linking its prevalence to the types of music women are not only tolerating but jamming out to, dancing to, and enjoying.
“The more misogynistic the lyrics get, the more y’all accept it, the more it’s gonna happen […] That’s just kinda what that is. So, ladies, I love y’all to death, but if y’all want men to stop calling you ‘b*tches,’ stop dancing to them records.”
I don’t see a single thing wrong with this position. Makes sense to me. Then again, I have a functioning brain and a higher than room temperature IQ. Many “ladies” didn’t take kindly to Ne-Yo’s argument and lashed out at him, equating his position to victim-blaming after a sexual assault. Those comments are just as ignorant and overwrought as one might expect.
However, one fan noted by Yahoo did stand up for the singer, and her comment is worth quoting where the others really aren’t:
“Who’s forcing the women to dance and listen to the lyrics? If no one patronized a business, it would typically close. Same here. Also… When positive music is put out there, I don’t see that blowing up the charts. Take accountability, stop the gaslighting. #IStandWithNeYo.”
Free markets FTW! I love it! She’s not wrong. The music is popular because ladies are jamming to it. If they didn’t, if the music wasn’t profitable, it would disappear right quick and in a hurry, but it seems very few want to have that conversation.
Throw some good beats behind some garbage lyrics and the club will be packed this weekend. And those same women will wonder why all the guys in the club call them b*tches… Maybe they should listen to Ne-Yo.
