Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy Offered Evacuation by US: ‘I Need Ammunition, Not a Ride’

Ukrainians are seriously made from different stuff. The old women are fearless. The young soldiers are dauntless. And their leaders? Strong and steadfast.

The New York Post reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was offered an evacuation by the United States, to hurry him away from Kyiv before the Russians potentially took the city, but Zelenskyy refused, saying, “The fight is here. I need ammunition, not a ride,” says “an American intelligence official with direct knowledge of the conversation.”

I didn’t think they made leaders like this anymore, but I was wrong. As it turns out, much to my chagrin, America just doesn’t elect leaders like this anymore. Instead, we get slow Joe and his proto-hooker VP.

Zelenskyy has made a number of other statements posted to social media. In one video, Zelenskyy stands with members of his cabinet saying, “All of us are here protecting the independence of our country, and it will continue to be this way.”

In yet another message broadcast to the world, Zelenskyy makes certain everyone understands that the people of Ukraine will continue to fight.

This is a similar message to that of the former president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, who said his people would hold out “forever” to fight for their independence.

This is some truly inspiring stuff, and I’m certain it makes a difference for their countrymen that such people would remain in the country and fight alongside them instead of catching the first ride out and leaving the nation to fall to the Russians. But let’s remember that this is a war. Men and women and children are dying, and romanticizing it doesn’t make that reality any less harsh.

“What an unbelievable honor to defend your country. Your children. Your traditions. Your language. Your culture. Your identity. Your existence.”

I don’t necessarily disagree. But then, I served my country. Such words ring rather hollow unless you’ve walked the walk. Zelenskyy, Poroshenko, and the other members of the Ukrainian leadership, they are doing just that.
