LA residents convicted of insurance fraud, and it somehow involves a bear costume

It is not rare to witness a bear roaming around the hills of Los Angeles. And there have likely been some legitimate insurance claims involving these furry creatures in recent years. In fact, Sierra Madre has recorded 41 instances of bears entering residences last year. This may or may not be why three Los Angeles residents felt as if they could get away with “Operation Bear Claw,” a bizarre insurance fraud scheme where several men faked a bear attack on their luxury vehicles, while submitting a video of a man in a bear suit.
Three Los Angeles County residents were charged on April 16 with insurance fraud involving a bear suit and luxury vehicles. A fourth awaits trial.

According to CBS:
Three Los Angeles County residents will spend their weekends in jail for dressing up as a bear and trashing luxury cars for insurance money.
Alfiya Zuckerman, 39, Ruben Tamrazian, 26, and Vahe Muradkhanyan, 32, pleaded no contest to felony insurance fraud. They were sentenced to 180 days in jail, which will be served through a weekend jail program, according to the California Department of Insurance. The trio was also placed on two years of supervised probation. Zuckerman and Tamazarian must also pay nearly $108,000 in restitution. The court has not determined the amount of restitution Muradkhanyan will pay. A fourth suspect, Ararat Chirkinian, 39, has another court date scheduled for September 2026.
Investigators said the suspects submitted insurance claims in 2024 that defrauded companies of $141,839. The Department of Insurance said the group sent video footage of a supposed bear damaging the inside of a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost, a 2015 Mercedes G63 AMG and a 2022 Mercedes E350.
They did not even think about the claims clearly. They committed the insurance fraud in the same location, filming the same fake bear in the suit. A biologist confirmed it was "clearly a human in a bear suit.
It is unclear how they got the idea they could get away with such a scheme, especially considering they copied each other's claims, but if you are surprised by this, you are not paying attention. Considering we are talking about the hospice fraud capital in the world, this is just another Tuesday for these types of fraudsters. Fortunately, though, it does appear they will be held accountable for these crimes, and that is all we can ask at this point.
