Game On: Republicans File Lawsuit Against New York City After Passing Law Allowing Non-Citizens to Vote
After a presidential election that was so hotly contested that people rioted at the capitol building, everyone is trying their damnedest to ensure the security and integrity of future elections. Okay, maybe not everyone. Definitely not Democrats.
While states like Texas, Arizona, and Georgia have moved to crack down on fraud, New York City has decided to open the flood gates, passing legislation earlier this week that allows over 800,000 non-citizens to vote in local New York City elections.
In a statement to the New York Times, Mayor Eric Adams said, “I believe that New Yorkers should have a say in their government, which is why I have and will continue to support this important legislation. I look forward to bringing millions more into the democratic process.”
However, the move has not sat well will everyone. Back in December 2021, Laurie Cumbo, who serves as a councilwoman in NYC, voted against the legislation on the grounds that it would allow more illegal Latinos to vote, and this is bad because Latinos voted disproportionately for Donald Trump in 2020.
She obviously had a different take on the legislation—one that was far more cynical—but the RNC has also taken umbrage with the law.
As per the Post Millennial, RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel had this to say:
"American elections should be decided by American citizens. If Democrats can subvert elections this flagrantly in America’s largest city, they can do it anywhere. The RNC is suing to protect the integrity of our elections, and we stand ready to do the same wherever Democrats try to attack the basic security of your ballot."
The RNCs argument against the law has far more to back it up than Cumbo’s, “I don’t want more people voting for Trump.”
The lawsuit argues that the legislation violates several statutes under the New York State Constitution, the State Election Law, and the Municipal Home Rule Law.
Hopefully, this blatant move subverting the will of American citizens, and residents of New York City, in particular, is quickly overturned, lest the Democrats of NYC use it to secure governance in the city for the foreseeable future without difficulty.
