Eddie Murphy Says He Won't Change for Outrage Culture
On this day in 2019...
Fans have wanted Eddie Murphy to return to stand-up ever since Eddie Murphy stopped doing stand-up. He's easily one of the best. Rumor has it, 2020 will finally be the year. Netflix backing a truck up to your front door and dumping gold bricks on your porch can be very convincing. However, because it's 2020, there will be idiots on Twitter going over every bit Eddie has ever done looking for something over which to feel stinging pains in the gluteus maximus. Such posterior pain leads to outrage. Outrage leads to clickbait. Clickbait leads to reporters demanding Eddie apologize for the 80's instead of promoting Coming to America 2. For which they'll probably also demand an apology or two.
How a comedian deals with such stupid usually depends on how little they care about the stupid (see WATCH: Dave Chappelle Mocks Perpetually Outraged Whiners with Brutal Impression and Bill Burr on PC Culture in Comedy: “Drive a Bus Right Through It.”). There's also a requirement to have massive piles of f*** you money. Eddie Murphy is on the right side of both, saying this:
I think if you watch Dolemite, it’s pretty clear that I’m not tiptoeing around anything. I’m doing what I’ve always done and I don’t even think about the time period we’re in, and how thin people’s skins have gotten or anything like that. I’m the same guy I’ve always been, and I’m just always going to be that guy, always doing just what I do. I won’t think, is someone going to get offended by me doing an Asian character? I just did the new Coming to America movie, and I did an old Jewish man. I wasn’t like, will Jewish people be offended? No. I’ve done it before and it’s funny.I tend to have only constructive thoughts when I try to do something creative. How do I make it the best that it can be? How can we have the most fun doing it? That’s as far as my thought process goes. Not who might be offended and who’ll get bent out of shape.
Thank the glory of Reverend Brown. We all know what's going to happen. At some point in the new year, Eddie Murphy is going to surprise one of the clubs by jumping up on stage. One person in the audience is going to not like one of his jokes and complain to the press. The press is going to act like Murphy was giving a speech on the floor of the senate and NOT just trying to test out new material. Cable news will take a break from bitching about Trump. Except for CNN, which will blame Murphy's joke on Donald Trump. Every one will demand apologies. There will be a hashtag. Most people will not know what the actual hell is happening nor will most people care. But media will try to make a crisis from nothing just because the first world is a land of spoiled cry babies.
All Eddie will be able to do is decide how much he cares if at all. Considering people have been waiting thirty years for his return to the stage, I'm confident he's only going to care whether or not people are laughing, not who he made cry because everyone else was laughing. Consider us in the laughing audience, possibly even at the tears.
