Bishop Robert Barron called out AOC for claiming that Western culture is “thin.” It’s unclear if she even understands what that phrase means or what Western culture has accomplished, but only someone so “thin” would make such a statement. This is why Barron said what needed to be said.
According to National Review:
“Marco Rubio’s speech was a pure appeal to ‘Western culture,’” she sneered from the stage at the University of Berlin, deploying deservedly exaggerated air quotes. She added that her “favorite part” of the speech was “when he said that American cowboys came from Spain,” at which point she and everyone else in the audience laughed at Rubio’s ignorance. “The Mexicans and descendants of African enslaved peoples would like to have a word on that,” she continued.
If the best she could do to prove his speech invalid was to make a comment regarding the Cowboys, that says more about her ignorance than she could ever imagine. This is what we call a “red herring” argument, as she pathetically targeted irrelevant information to distract from his main point.
“We can’t underestimate the appeal of going back to these well-worn grooves,” Ocasio-Cortez warned of Rubio’s “thin” appeal to shared cultural affinities across the Western world. “A lot of what we talk about when we talk about a class-based internationalist perspective also means ending the hypocrisy toward the global south.”
According to Barron, "The culture that gave us all those great figures, that gave us the rule of law, that gave us respect for the rights of the individual, that gave us our democratic political system, that gave us the university system— that's thin?"
She does realize it was the West that first banned slavery, right? She does realize it was the West that first started seeing people as worthy of human rights, right? She does realize that people in the third world do everything in their power to move to the West, and not the other way around, right? Is all of that thin? Certainly, only a thin person would believe so.
The world is a better place because of Western culture, and she fools no one.
“I think what we identify is that in a rules-based order, hypocrisy is vulnerability,” the representative said, scratching out something like a doctrinal approach to foreign policy. “What we are seeking is a return to a rules-based order that eliminates the hypocrisies around — when too often in the West we look the other way for inconvenient populations to act out these paradoxes.”
To sum it up: the West is bad and has done nothing beneficial for the world, and third-world societies can do no wrong. Got it.
Barron added that he is “getting a little concerned that in some of these leading figures in our own politics, a Marxist philosophy is taking hold." I would say that the concern is not “little”—it is a full-blown attack. She is trying to destroy every good and moral thing the West built, and while that may be through her stupidity and ignorance or something far more sinister, it does nothing beneficial for this country. And in her attempt to get clicks on the interweb, she has proven for the hundredth time just who she is rooting for, and it certainly is not the American people.
