Director Says Uvalde Shooting Could Have Been Stopped in Only Three Minutes During Heartwrenching Testimony
I suggest removing anything from the general vicinity that can be used as a projectile before you read any further because the police response to the Uvalde shooting has managed to get more infuriating. Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw addressed a Texas state senate hearing today. He had more details than the last time we heard from him. Most notably that the shooter could have been put down in three minutes, as opposed to the one hour and fourteen minutes it took.
McGraw testified that, within three minutes, there were enough officers armed and armored up to "isolate, distract, and neutralize" the shooter. The only thing stopping them was the on-scene commander who never made the call.
“The officers had weapons. The children had none. The officers had body armor. The children had none," said Steve McCraw at Uvalde hearing. "The officers had training. The subject had none.” https://t.co/Z86gPqSb1d via @mediaitepic.twitter.com/G7PAA61hob

“The officers had weapons. The children had none. The officers had body armor. The children had none. The officers had training. The subject had none. One hour, fourteen minutes, and eight seconds. That’s how long the children waited, and the teachers waited in room 111 to be rescued. And while they waited, the commander waited for radio and rifles. Then he waited for shields. Then he waited for SWAT. Lastly, he waited for a key that was never needed."
Yeah, that was the other thing we learned today, in case there is a spot on your wall you haven't put your fist through yet. The locked classroom door cops were waiting for someone to find a key for? Instead of breaching the door the old-fashioned way? The door wasn't locked.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas public safety chief says classroom door in Uvalde school shooting was not locked, even as police waited for key.

A woman drove forty miles to the school, got arrested and released, then ran into the school to get her kids, all while the police were standing outside the classroom where a gunman was shooting children, with the firepower and protection to take the gunman down, but they did nothing. The commanding officer never gave the order.
I'm not sure if it's protocol to take the commanding officer out with a rifle butt to the head, declare "I'm in charge now," and go take out the shooter before he killed any more children. But I also wouldn't care.
