In the UK, it is now unlawful to call someone a f----t, so much so that you can, and likely will, be charged with a hate crime if it's reported to the authorities.

Elizabeth Kinney, a 34-year-old care home worker, was charged with a hate crime after she ranted to her friend about her alleged attacker, calling him a 'f----t'. While no one has been charged or convicted of assault, I would not be surprised if it were true. Nonetheless, that's some "friend" who would just go and rat you out to the police for simply venting after claiming to be the victim of an awful crime. Incredible that these people would line up as the de facto secret police for the UK Gestapo, but that is neither here nor there. The point remains: if you are not even free to criticize people you claim have attacked you, are you even free? No, the answer is no.

According to the Daily Mail:

During the messaging the single mother-of-four even sent pictures of her injuries from the assault, which resulted in her being admitted to hospital.

But Kinney, an aspiring nurse, was reported to police over the use of the word 'f****t' to describe the unnamed man and later charged with malicious communications offences.

Today I learned that “malicious communications offences” is a thing in the UK. How can something even be “malicious” if she was simply stating her opinion? An opinion does not have to be nice, certainly not for someone she claims attacked her. So, it begs the question: how could she have intended to cause harm by simply stating some f----t hurt her? That remains unclear, but next time you wish to text vent to your friend, you'd better make sure they are not working for the de facto secret police.

At Sefton magistrates court Kinney, from Tranmere, pleaded guilty to causing to be sent by public communication network an offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing messages.

She insisted her words were a 'thoughtless rant' and that she was not attacking anyone's sexuality.

But JPs said her remark was 'homophobic' and gave her an 'uplifted' sentence of a 12 month community order. She was also ordered to undertake 72 hours of unpaid work and 10 rehabilitation activity days and pay £364 in costs and surcharge.

This is truly 5th-grade level stuff. You can use these words and not mean any offense to gay people, but that does not even matter. She should be free to say whatever “slur” she wishes, but unfortunately, she no longer lives in a free country.

Outlining the facts, Jacqueline Whiting, prosecuting, said: 'The defendant and the victim in this matter had been friends but had a falling out which resulted in an incident on the October 27, 2024 whereby abusive and homophobic text messages were sent to the victim causing her alarm and distress.

'The Crown place this offence in the highest category of its type due to the effect related to sexual orientation and the greater harm because it had moderate impact.'

Question: If this “slur” was said to a straight person, or a slur about a straight person, would the punishment have remained? I think everyone knows the answer to that. Nonetheless, be careful what you say, because Big Brother is always watching. Well, at least in the UK.
