Narrative Buster: Research Shows School Shootings are Declining
The subject of school shootings has been dominating the news cycle lately. Between all the threats, fear mongering, protests and gun control, the media is saturated with student blood (see Dana Loesch at CPAC 2018 Scorches Media for Loving School Shootings). The mainstream narrative being "we need gun control yesterday." Now we have new school shooting research.
Research which seems to disagree with the leftist narrative:
While certain policies may help decrease gun violence in general, it’s unlikely that any of them will prevent mass school shootings, according to James Alan Fox, the Lipman Family Professor of Criminology, Law, and Public Policy at Northeastern.“The thing to remember is that these are extremely rare events, and no matter what you can come up with to prevent it, the shooter will have a workaround,” Fox said, adding that over the past 35 years, there have been only five cases in which someone ages 18 to 20 used an assault rifle in a mass shooting.
This point seems a bit relevant considering how much the mewling mainstream media hates all things "assault rifle." Even though most anti-gunners couldn't tell an assault rifle from a garden hose.
Take a look at the numbers:
"This is not an epidemic:" Mass school shootings are incredibly rare events. In research publishing later this year, Fox and doctoral student Emma Fridel found that on average, mass murders occur between 20 and 30 times per year, and about one of those incidents on average takes place at a school.
Fridel and Fox used data collected by USA Today, the FBI’s Supplementary Homicide Report, Congressional Research Service, Gun Violence Archive, Stanford Geospatial Center and Stanford Libraries, Mother Jones, Everytown for Gun Safety, and an NYPD report on active shooters.
Their research also finds that shooting incidents involving students have been declining since the 1990s.
The researchers go on to suggest a little gun control (banning bump stocks, raising the age to purchase) wouldn't hurt anyone. Except the poor chaps being stripped of their rights. So in that respect, we disagree on the solution. Still, the facts remain the same: this data doesn't bode well for the gun control narrative. The one which says we must get guns off our streets now because they're invading our schools and murdering all the childrens.
With these numbers in mind, liberal asshats pushing gun control in response to the shooting look like... Well, even bigger asshats (see Katy Tur Says People Must Choose Between Kids or Guns and Chelsea Handler Pretends She Cares About Kids to Push Gun Control. Looks Like an Idiot.).
