Mamdani's city-run grocery stores? It'll cost taxpayers $70 million just to "study" if it's possible

For a mayor who spent his campaign promising everything would be free, it sure takes a lot of money to get those free things. It’s weird how things work out like that, isn't it?

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is mulling spending $70 million to study his proposed government-owned grocery store. This news comes just a week after he threatened to raise taxes on the middle class because the city has a budget shortfall.
According to the New York Post:
Hizzoner is proposing the new funding for the city Economic Development Corporation simply to scout potential locations for the five stores he’s pledged to open in each borough, according to sources who reviewed preliminary budget documents.
One city source with knowledge of the plans described it as a “feasibility study.”
This is just to study the possibility of an abstract idea the mayor has in his head. It’s unclear how much it would take to actually run five grocery stores, but it is safe to assume it will be a lot more than $70 million.
Another was galled at the idea that the city would move forward with funding the grocery store plan — all while the mayor is sounding the alarm about a $5.4 billion budget gap plaguing the Big Apple.
The financial line item for the socialist freebie — which has not been previously reported — comes as Mamdani is ramping up pressure on the state to tax the rich, or he’ll be forced to raise property taxes to bail the city out.
Isn't it bizarre how the more free things socialists promise, the more expensive it is to get to those things? And oddly, it always seems like those struggling to make ends meet are impacted the worst. So, in the pursuit to help out the little guy living paycheck to paycheck, life will become more expensive because of these so-called “free” benefits. To call this predictable would be an understatement.
There is a saying that was coined for this, which is that nothing in life is free. Why socialists refuse to admit that is beyond reason. But in the pathetic pursuit to pretend to care about a thing or two about a thing or two, everyone's worse off. Subsequently, one of the most expensive places to live in the nation is about to get more expensive, all under the guise of making it more affordable. It's astonishing how things work out that way, isn't it?
