According to Hakeem Jeffries, the Pledge of Allegiance stands for “diversity, equity, and inclusion.” He justifies this by repeating the phrase: “liberty and justice for all.” According to him, when you attack DEI, you attack American values. And to claim his stance is completely nonsensical would be an understatement.
Firstly, the Pledge of Allegiance is intended to affirm loyalty to one's country. This is hard to do when you pretend you should also include foreign nationals. This is especially a bizarre claim because the pledge is intended to promote allegiance to the republic. How can you do that if you include everyone all over the globe?
According to the Daily Caller:
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told left-wing activists Thursday that the Trump administration was carrying out an “all-out assault on civil rights” by opposing diversity, equity and inclusion.
“No matter what these extremists are trying to do with their all-out assault on civil rights, on voting rights, certainly on diversity, equity and inclusion — and we won’t let these extremists get away with lying to the American people,” the New York Democrat maintained. “They want to suggest that diversity, equity, and inclusion are foreign values. They’re not foreign values, they’re American values.”
It is unclear how these can be American values when America was founded on the idea that all men are created equal. Equality does not mean equity. It also does not mean giving one person a leg up for insignificant birth traits, while punishing people who strive based on merit. In fact, this is the antithesis of American values.
“Let’s just check the record. The motto of this great country, ‘E pluribus unum,’ that’s the motto of this great country, ‘Out of many, one.’ That’s diversity,” Jeffries continued. “One of the most important constitutional amendments in this country, a Reconstruction amendment, the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, contains the Equal Protection Clause. And the Equal Protection Clause in the 14th Amendment promises equal protection under the law. That’s equity.”
This is deeply inaccurate. What this means is that Americans share a common identity in that people assimilate into the same set of values. This is also why being American has nothing to do with race. DEI has almost everything to do with skin color, which is why these things cannot coexist.
Equity requires forced outcomes by the government. This is not the American way, and it is asinine to make such a claim. It is unclear if he understands this and is lying, or if he is just a total lunatic who is really that naive. In his case, however, it is possible that both are true.
