The only problem with offering free things is that they're never truly free—someone always ends up paying the price.

Just think about it: New York City has the most radical rent control in the country, yet it remains one of the most expensive places to live in the world. So it turns out that extreme price controls don’t actually make housing affordable for most people.

Can you name one place where handing out “free” things made it so everyone was better off? No? Didn’t think so.

Which makes it all the more bizarre that Zohran Mamdani, a 2025 New York City mayoral candidate, released a campaign ad promising rent freezes, free buses, universal childcare, and cheaper groceries, suggesting that the city’s budget is a bottomless ATM. And just to spice things up? He said it all in Hindi.

I don’t have to tell you how arrogant and pathologically dishonest he is—but if the shoe fits, it freaking fits.

According to The Heritage Foundation, “New York has turned private property into government-run subsidized housing without footing the bill, or in any other way compensating owners for using their private property as a public subsidy.”

This is evident by the fact that landlords are beholden to the demands of their tenants, despite this little thing called “private property rights.”

Want to evict your tenant? Too bad, as in some cases, that has cost landlords over $1 million.

"Want to start charging market rent in a rent-stabilized unit? Get real. And you’d better pray the tenant doesn’t have a relative waiting in the wings—because in New York, they can pass that apartment down like it’s a family heirloom.

And don’t even think about moving into your own unit, as once again, landlords are beholden to tenants.

Thus, we can only assume someone like Mamdani would embolden this system and make it so much worse. So, while he claims he’s all in it for the little guy, that could not be further from the truth.

Artificially making things “cheaper” for a fraction of the population almost always makes it less affordable for everyone else.

According to The Hill, the average cost for a one-bedroom in NYC is over $4k a month, rising nearly 6% a year. And Progressive has no one to blame but themselves, despite their lies about evil corporate landlords trying to take advantage of the system.

It’s incredible how one of the most controlled places for rent also happens to be one of the most expensive places to live, but that is the way things go when incompetent leftists start promising more than they can deliver.

It’s also unclear how Mamdani will make groceries cheaper because he has zero control over that.

The average cost of groceries per month is around $500, which is much higher than the US average of $350. Just because leftists whine about these issues doesn’t mean their broken promises will fix anything, especially since they’re mostly to blame for getting us here in the first place.

And free childcare? Oh, please. That’s beyond comical.

Mamdani can make promises in any language he wants, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s an incompetent buffoon with zero grasp of economics. Still, that won’t stop him from pretending to care, vowing to implement policies that will leave most people worse off, while a small sliver of the population barely benefits without having done anything to earn it.

It’s unclear whether making New York City great again is even possible, but if voters elect this guy, we can be pretty sure there’s no coming back
