You would have thought they would have learned the first time.

On October 30th of 2024, the home of Peanut, a rescued squirrel and social media sensation, was raided by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. Peanut the Squirrel and Fred the Raccoon were captured and euthanized. The state claimed that rodents’ brain tissue needed to be examined for rabies after the squirrel bit the hand of one of the Critter Cops.

The seizure of Peanut and Fred was an indictment of government overreach and, while I’m not going to say it pushed Donald Trump over the top, it certainly didn’t help the Democrat's image as authoritarian busybodies who wanted to bust down your door and raid your home for illegal squirrels.

But, the Left never learns.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources ordered Peanut, a blind baby deer, and Kota, a rescued coyote, to be euthanized. The animals are under the care of the Detroit Animal Welfare Group and are currently being rehabilitated. DAWG plans on keeping the animals as educational ambassadors, as they cannot be released back into the wild. You know. Blind deer don't really do so great on the outside. DAWG missed the deadline for the educational permit.

It’s another example of dogmatic bureaucratic overreach in a state that has been blue until recently.

Republicans took the Michigan house in 2024. As part of their agenda, they formed the Weaponization of State Government Subcommittee to investigate politically motivated government actions and overreach in the state. They have opened up investigations into Covid-19 abuses and the Flint Water Crisis.

One of the Weaponization of State Government Subcommittee’s targets: the Department of Natural Resources. The DNR has been going after farmers and game ranchers and, apparently, blind baby deers named Peanut.

People all over Michigan, including state representatives, reached out to Governor Gretchen Whitmer to get a stay of execution. Whitmer’s time as governor has been fraught with inconsistent and, like all Leftist governments, overly bureaucratic policies.

The good news: on Thursday, the DNR quietly granted the permit to spare Peanut after the outrage.

But the question remains: did the Left learn their lesson or will they wait for the next opportunity to send in their Gestapo to kill another innocent animal named Peanut?
