Robert Redford Pens OpEd Claiming Trump is a Secret, Evil Monarch. Provides Zero Examples.
OpEds are opinion pieces, sure. As someone who tries to hit at least one OpEd a week, I do understand how they work and that sometimes an opinion piece is just a piece with nothing but your opinion. Fine. But if you want to back your opinion up with more than just ranting and raving, it's best to bolster a point with evidence. Even if that's just one point with one bit of evidence. Say, for example, if you claim Donald Trump is ruling America like a despotic monarch, and you haven't seen this kind of scum and villainy since World War II. Maybe toss in a little one of these babies: "Remember the time when Trump did X thing just like King Henry VIII?" Or "Trump is to the presidency like King George was to early America in that [example here]." Alas, Robert Redford said no star was out of reach when he posted this hyperbolic dribble on NBC: President Trump's dictator-like administration is attacking the values America holds dear
What values? Redford paints with a broad brush, claiming that a single man, Trump, is threatening truth, law, and the First Amendment. How, he doesn't ever actually say. How is his administration "dictator-like"? That's never clarified either. Instead, we get breathless, panicky paragraphs like this:
We’re up against a crisis I never thought I’d see in my lifetime: a dictator-like attack by President Donald Trump on everything this country stands for. As last week’s impeachment hearings made clear, our shared tolerance and respect for the truth, our sacred rule of law, our essential freedom of the press and our precious freedoms of speech — all have been threatened by a single man.
That really is as specific as Redford gets. But it's not as doom and gloomy.
Tonight it pains me to watch what is happening to our country. Growing up as a child during World War II, I watched a united America defend itself against the threat of fascism. I watched this again, during the Watergate crisis, when our democracy was threatened. And again, when terrorists turned our world upside down.
I miss Paul Newman. Paul raced cars and slapped his face on salad dressing. How sad that Sundance here has become such an unoriginal hacky sack, comparing a president he doesn't like to Hitler, scowly Nixon, and terrorists who murdered Americans.
Trump says some shit. Trump tweets some things. Not all of it spelled correctly. Which hey, that's pretty irksome. But saying some shit and tweeting things which aren't always spellchecked, is in no way comparable to, say, a king beheading a beloved religious advisor simply for not agreeing he's the leader of his own church.
We’re at a point in time where I reluctantly believe that we have much to lose — it is a critical and unforgiving moment. This monarchy in disguise has been so exhausting and chaotic, it’s not in the least bit surprising so many citizens are disillusioned.
Not once does Bob say how Trump is like a monarch. Not once does Bob illuminate to us little serfs how He with Orange Hair is secretly ruling us all with edicts and decrees. Not once does Bob share with us how The Frankly Best King will do away with elections to rule until death, at which point the act of succession paves the way for Donald Trump Jr. to don the crown.
Nope, all Robert Redford does is what every other leftist can think of doing: screaming, gnashing teeth, having a tantrum that his guy isn't running the show, and how dare Americans be so stupid to even consider re-electing a clear despot. A despot so clever and cunning, not even one as brilliant as Robert Redford can provide a simple example as to how the despot is despotic. We're all just supposed to know based on the impeachment hearings. Cute story.
However, there is a side which is threatening freedom of speech, truth and the rule of law. But it ain't Trump. Here, evidence:
