Heroic principles are hard to find these days, but if anyone deserves the award of school administrator of the year, it certainly should go to Pauls Valley High School Principal Kirk Moore.
Victor Hawkins, a 20-year-old former student, attempted to shoot up the high school before Moore tackled him to the ground, which resulted in the principal getting shot in the leg. Fortunately, he is in stable condition.
According to Fox News:
Authorities said the shooting unfolded around 2:21 p.m., prompting a lockdown until officers cleared the scene. Moore and other staff subdued the gunman until law enforcement arrived and arrested Hawkins.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by the outlet, Hawkins entered the school carrying two loaded semi-automatic pistols.
The affidavit states Moore ran to the lobby after hearing gunfire, where Hawkins allegedly fired at him, striking him in the leg.
When entering the school, the attempted shooter ordered people to get on the ground, and he then proceeded to point a gun at a student. Fortunately, the gun malfunctioned, and the student was unharmed. That is when Moore "wrestled with Hawkins on a bench in the foyer and was able to remove Hawkins’ pistol from his hand.”
Moore, along with other staff members, held the shooter down until officers arrived on the scene.
Court documents reviewed by the outlet show Hawkins studied the Columbine school shooting and told investigators he "wanted to conduct his own school shooting like the Columbine shooters did."
This could have ended very differently had the principal been elsewhere at the time of the incident.
"I look forward to returning to work as soon as possible so that I may continue my life’s work educating the next generation of Oklahoma leaders. Until then, my thoughts are with our outstanding students, safe today in the arms of their families and friends.”
He risked his life to prevent harm to students. To call him a hero would be an understatement.
