At the 2026 California State of the Union, Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom took time out of his speech to thank LAUSD Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. These thoughts have now resurfaced since the FBI raided Carvalho’s residence on Wednesday.

Newsom previously praised Carvalho for leading the state's second-largest school district, claiming he has led the district through historic improvements. While the Governor would like to praise the man for helping return to subpar levels, the results speak for themselves.

Nonetheless, federal authorities executed search warrants at the home of Carvalho and at LAUSD headquarters. The warrants have been sealed by the courts but there was a related FBI search at a residence in Florida that is related to “AllHere, a tech start-up that had secured a contract with the school district for an A.I. chatbot before the company filed for bankruptcy in 2024. The founder of AllHere was later charged with fraud,” according to the New York Times.

Carvalho has been involved in a number of controversies during his tenure. Last week, the Justice Department joined a lawsuit that accuses the district of discriminating against White students in a program that is believed to “use racial demographics to determine school funding.”

Carvalho also once lived in this country illegally. While he is now a U.S. Citizen, he still spends much of his time working against this nation's enforcement of its common-sense immigration laws.

In April, the district refused to give DHS access to two students after they claimed they were doing a welfare check, not immigration enforcement. So, while this man did not respect our immigration laws when he overstayed his visa in the 1990s, he also does not respect them today.

He has spoken out against federal enforcement operations multiple times.

At a September 2025 news conference, he said students and families should be protected from “immoral, unethical and illegal actions” while referring to ICE raids in LA, describing an “unbearable lack of humanity.”

While Newsom would like to praise this man for delivering mediocre results, at best, his actions speak for themselves. This man has never respected this country's laws. He has failed to deliver educational excellence for this nation's second-largest district. Most importantly, he does not believe Americans deserve national security, as he fights against the enforcement of federal immigration laws.

Next time Newsom praises a former illegal alien for delivering subpar results for tens of thousands of students — be suspicious — be very suspicious.
