New Poll: Liberals Twice as Likely to Oppose Free Speech
We’ve been covering the recent turmoil on college campuses for a few weeks now (read Dear Mizzou Morons: You're 'The Boys Who Cried Racist'), where over privileged Millennials complain that people say mean things, and demand others get fired for it. Like the Oppressed Mizzou 'Hunger Strike' Student Who is Actually Hilariously Wealthy. According to this Pew poll, it’s even worse…
From Pew Research:
American Millennials are far more likely than older generations to say the government should be able to prevent people from saying offensive statements about minority groups, according to a new analysis of Pew Research Center survey data on free speech and media across the globe. We asked whether people believe that citizens should be able to make public statements that are offensive to minority groups, or whether the government should be able to prevent people from saying these things. Four-in-ten Millennials say the government should be able to prevent people publicly making statements that are offensive to minority groups, while 58% said such speech is OK.
Remember, no one is saying it’s polite or great for people to go shouting racial slurs or being a douchebag. But the First Amendment allows for free speech, even speech deemed "offensive." What makes it possible for people to whine about white privilege and make up liberal protest chants, is the same right which gives people the ability to scream obscenities. It's the same right people use to enact change through speech, by the way. This is all pretty basic stuff, but since these overpriced colleges, and their teacher union-protected schools which fed them these students, haven't taught these children the basics about the constitution, we're stepping in. Also feelings don't matter as much as you think they do.
Secondly, what the poll asked was “should Government be able to prevent….” 40% of our best and brightest want the government to outlaw speech they find offensive (like this idiot Mizzou Student Who's Tired of First Amendment Rights)…which would be bad enough, if also those same millenials didn’t arbitrarily decide what is or isn’t offensive based on their mood that week. Like the gun control "mental health" argument, who's going to decide what is and isn't offensive? Will Obama nominate a speech czar who will sit in her office on high and write decrees? Thou shalt use gender neutral pronouns... Write an essay about that, kids.
Thirdly, and this is key, there's a dangerous progression here. Yeah, 40 percent of Millennials are okay with government regulated speech, but so are 35 percent of Democrats. Twice as many Democrats favor censorship as Republicans. See a trend? A growing number of people favor the limiting of free speech. This is called a slippery slope, it's greased with non fat margin. Now try this: look back at history to a Democrat like Kennedy then forward to Obama. Notice something? An extreme shift in attitude on personal responsibility and freedom. We're certainly progressing, but not in the direction we should be.
If you want to see the future Millennials and their liberal forefathers and cisgendered mothers (feel) they want, look to European countries where socialism has been allowed to run unfettered for awhile. Look to Germany, where 70% favorite government controls of speech. Germany, you guys. They're totally cool with limiting speech. Um, hello? Do we remember something pivotal that happened in Germany last century, involving an overbearing and oppressive government? It's like these people never learn...
