"I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” That is all that needs to be said regarding this story.
Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones has decided to stand by his actions after he sent detectives to a woman's home over a social media post. The local activist, Raquel Pacheco, criticized Mayor Steven Meiner on Facebook.
“The guy who consistently calls for the death of all Palestinians, tried to shut down a theater for showing a movie that hurt his feelings, and REFUSES to stand up for the LGBTQ community in any way (even leaves the room when they vote on related matters) wants you to know that you’re all welcome here,” punctuating her post with three clown emojis.
I may disagree with a lot of what this woman said, but I am having a hard time finding the sentence that made this a police matter. Last time I checked, this was America, where speech is, in fact, free.
The chief has since doubled down on his reprehensible actions.
According to Local 10 News:
“Given the real, ongoing national and international concerns surrounding antisemitic attacks and recent rhetoric that has led to violence against political figures,” Jones wrote that he “directed two of his detectives to initiate a brief, voluntary conversation regarding certain inflammatory, potentially inciteful false remarks made by a resident to ensure there was no immediate threat to the elected official or the broader community that might emerge as a result of the post.”
No, sorry, that is not how things work. You don't get to investigate speech because there is an abstract possibility someone might become radicalized by it. That's not how these things work. She never called for violence, and calling it “potentially inciteful” is a delusional lie. You don't investigate lawful speech by pretending you want to make sure there is no “immediate threat.” You need evidence of a threat to do that, but there was none.
If you don't have the right to criticize elected officials, you have no rights. And while he can flirt around the law and say this was about safety, what it truly seems like is a way to instill fear in the public to not speak their mind. That is so un-American and has no place in this great nation.
He went on to write that “the interaction was handled professionally and at no time did the mayor or any other official direct me to take action.”
Handling it professionally would not be handling this at all. There was nothing to be handled, and by handling it, he handled it in the most unprofessional way. He should be ashamed and apologize for his actions, but he won't, as he believes his power trip overrides the American way. Pathetic, absolutely pathetic.
