At one time, the West was considered a mature society. It’s unclear exactly when that changed, but New Zealand’s parliament knows that better than anyone.
Parliament in New Zealand took a short break on Thursday when people watching from the gallery started doing a haka after the newest Māori Party MP gave her first speech, according to Reuters.
Te Pāti Māori’s Oriini Kaipara, elected in September, gave her first speech on Thursday. Afterward, MPs and the public gallery sang a planned Māori song, which then turned into an unsanctioned haka, joined by some MPs, according to the outlet.
Speaker of the House Gerry Brownlee asked them to stop.
"No, not that. The guarantee was that would not be taking place," he said. When they continued he suspended the sitting.
MPs have to get permission before they can start a haka like that.
Parliament later resumed and Brownlee said he planned to investigate whether any party or members of parliament had prior knowledge of the haka, describing the public gallery's actions as contemptuous.
This actually happens fairly often in New Zealand’s parliament.

In June, three members of Te Pati Maori received historically lengthy suspensions for performing a haka to disrupt the vote on a contentious bill that would reinterpret a 184-year-old treaty between the British and Indigenous Maori. The bill has since failed to pass into law.
A historic moment unfolded in New Zealand’s parliament as 22-year-old Te Pāti Māori MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke (@hana_rawhiti) led a haka protest against a highly contentious bill proposing to redefine the Treaty of Waitangi.

Why is this a thing?
I don’t know… if my representatives broke out into a haka, I’d be a bit embarrassed—but that’s just my two cents. I get that it’s not a huge deal, but how do these people take themselves seriously? There are much more mature ways to handle things, but I guess New Zealanders take their haka very, very seriously.
