In Philadelphia, the schools are failing. Or, they at the very least need more money. Funny how in the case of both, it's areas where democrats have been in total control for decades, but I digress. Mayor Charelle Parker did what any democrat official would do: she found something she could tax instead of reforming the failing institution in question.

The residents of Philadelphia were unhappy. So the mayor lashed out at them for having the nerve to question her about finding a new way to take their money away from them.

We are open for business here, but how dare you tell me as mayor of this city, to tell the people in this city, that we can not and should not enact what is one of the most limited powers that we have, and that it is to decide how we will drive revenue to the school district of Philadelphia.

I know what you're thinking. "Hey Brodigan, radical leftism in Philly? The heck you say!"

Heck! I do, in point of fact, say heck!

You're probably also thinking, "Hey Brodigan, Democrats only tax millionaires and billionaires. Or, tax billionaires if the democrat taxing them is a millionaire. Why shouldn't people who make more money than me pay their fair share?"

Well, they pay more than their fair share, but that's beside the point. She isn't taxing billionaires. One of the great things about being a billionaire is that you can afford to live somewhere other than Philadelphia. She is taxing the middle class by instituting a new tax every time you use a ride-share app like Uber. Philly is a big city. Many middle- and lower-income users use rideshare apps. If the Mayor has her druthers, those rides are about to get more expensive.

Fun fact about the Philly school system. Taxpayers are already on the hook for $32,000 per student. Per student, who ranks 33% in math and 31% in reading, which is well below the rest of the state. The statewide average is also only $23,000ish per student.

This is just one blogger who has been out of school for over thirty years' opinion, but if I could offer a suggestion, the mayor may want to show voters a PowerPoint presentation about how efficiently she is spending their tax dollars on their children's education now -- and not silly things like administrators and consultants -- to show WHY she needs more money. You know, instead of just taking it and then having a hissy fit when they are unhappy about it.
