Just when you think the hospice fraud situation in California could not get any worse, it beats everyone's expectations.
Fox News just exposed how an alleged hospice scam would recruit elderly patients by going door to door, claiming they were offering free supplies. When in reality, they drained their Medicare benefits, while the “patients” received nothing in return.
According to Fox News, Medicare provides every American $35,000 for end-of-life care. However, when you live in California, you live with the risk of fraudsters coming to your door, pretending to offer services, but then end up draining your account instead. That is what happened to one elderly couple.
In July, a recruiter knocked on one couple's door, promising things like a new walker and mattress pads. They were enrolled with Graceful Care Hospice, which paid the alleged fraudsters more than $200 per day.
In 2023 and 2024, the alleged fraudsters enrolled about a couple of dozen patients. However, the company billed Medicare over $1 million for 109 patients.
So far, at least 21 people have been charged with ties to alleged hospice fraud schemes in the state. As of writing this, the company has yet to be charged with a crime, so draw your own conclusions. Nonetheless, to claim that this investigation screams major red flags would be an understatement.
What is even going on in the state? Do these people just inform their cousins how ridiculously easy it is to defraud the American taxpayer? Again, that is up for you to decide.
While it is great that the media is actually starting to take things like defrauding the American taxpayer seriously, it still proves just how little officials care to do the bare minimum of their job -- which is to ensure funds are being spent for legitimate purposes. Just when you think California could not get any more incompetent, here is more alleged fraud coming in like it's just another Tuesday. It truly is incredible.
It is time officials start taking crimes that target the elderly much more seriously.
