Aunt Jemima Has Been Canceled. We've Cured Racism, Everyone!
We did it, everyone. We fixed racism. After all these years and all these attempts, racism is gone. Celebrities couldn't do it. Influencers couldn't do it. It took the strength, the bravery, and the true grit of a corporation to stand up and say it was time. We're canceling Aunt Jemima. After 130 years, finally this national embarrassment can be put behind us and we can finally work toward racial understanding.
Quaker Oats is retiring the more than 130-year-old Aunt Jemima brand and logo, acknowledging its origins are based on a racial stereotype.
"As we work to make progress toward racial equality through several initiatives, we also must take a hard look at our portfolio of brands and ensure they reflect our values and meet our consumers' expectations," the Pepsi-owned company said in a statement provided to CNN Business.
Look, I'm the first to say that there are multiple perspectives based on what we've all been through in our lives. My perspective can be somewhat askew due to my lack of melanin and bad experiences with police officers. Except for the one time I got clocked doing ninety down the parkway, but that's not important right now.
To me, moves like this reek of empty symbolism. Kinda like the brave girl staring down the Wall Street bull to symbolize that there should be more women in executive finance positions. Just not at the company that installed the brave girl staring down the Wall Street bull to symbolize that there should be more women in executive finance positions.
Quaker Oats decided that after Civil War reconciliation, the civil rights movement, and Vanilla Ice's rap career, NOW is suddenly the time to remove the brand? As corporations are tripping over each other to find new ways to pander? It rings hollow and as a distraction from instituting any actual change. But that could just be my privilege talking.
Also, what are liberals going to call African-American female conservatives they disagree with now?
