Earlier this month, a deranged man with a knife threatened to stab customers in a South Carolina Walmart before he was quickly neutralized by a bystander. The assailant waved his pocketknife at customers, and one bystander said he demanded $20, which seems like enough evidence that the perpetrator was not of sound mind. Obviously, theft is evil, but if you're gonna risk jail time, wouldn't you go a little higher than $20? Just saying.

Video of the incident shows one customer attempting to stop the assailant, but he was forced to swerve to avoid the man's flailing knife. Another customer then approaches from behind and smacks him on the noggin with a metal stanchion.

The hero of the story is military veteran Demario Davis. Davis actually tweeted the video of the incident saying, "I just neutralized the situation!" Which is pretty baller.

Davis told Fox News he heard the man yell, "when the cops get here I'm going to start cutting you all up." He said that's when his military training kicked in, and his first instinct was to "neutralize the situation." And that he did.

Davis continued, "I'm a community person, so if I see something in the community that's not right, with all the violence and things and attacks going on, gun violence you know, you want your people in the community to step up as well. The cops can't do it all by themselves."

Davis also spoke to Newsmax.

The Walmart in question is located in Richland County, South Carolina. Last fall, the Sheriff of Richland County pleaded for higher deputy pay. He said low wages were making it difficult to keep a full staff, and that the department lost 71 deputies last year.

It's almost as if funding the organizations that protect us would lead to better levels of protection! But at least there are still civilian heroes like Davis out there, waiting in the wings, metal stanchions in hand.
