'I Don't Understand That:' Tom Hanks Speaks Out on Disney Recasting Tim Allen's Buzz Lightyear
Add Tom Hanks to the list of people who don't understand why Disney recast Tim Allen's Buzz Lightyear in the failed Lightyear movie. Hanks starred opposite Allen in the Toy Story franchise and was looking forward to going head to head with his friend when his Elvis biopic hit theaters.
The actor took a break from threatening to beat down someone who got too close to his wife to share his thoughts on the casting change.
“Why it’s not…actually I wanted to go head-to-head with Tim Allen, and then they didn’t let Tim Allen do it. I don’t understand that.”
When the interviewer, who, like Hanks, I'm sure is aware of the casting controversy, mentioned they recast Allen with Chris Evans, Hanks responded, “Yeah, yeah, I know.”
Hanks isn't the only one confused. Patricia Heaton spoke out about her friend Tim Allen being recast, wondering why Disney "would completely castrate this iconic, beloved character?"
Critics believe politics may have something to do with it. Tim Allen has turned into an outspoken conservative, which is a rarity in Hollywood. It is widely believed that being an outspoken conservative, or even a milquetoast conservative, or even slightly to the right of Karl Marx, doesn't play in Tinseltown. Chris Evans, the actor who replaced Allen, is on record as hating outspoken conservatives.
The doomed movie also found itself involved in America's culture wars. A deleted scene was put back in the movie because filmmakers thought it would spite Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Though, it was still left out of the movie in certain other countries.
Tim Allen himself recently spoke out about the movie, stating, “There’s really no Toy Story’s Buzz without Woody." Tom Hanks sounds like he agrees.
