I’m not going to say vigilante justice should be condoned. Two wrongs don’t necessarily make a right. Three lefts do, but that’s a philosophical conversation we can save for another day.

What I will say, however, is that the justice system often fails to hand down punishments that truly fit the nature of the crime. If it did, there’d be no murderers serving out life sentences, no rapists looking at parole in a handful of years, and no child molesters who ever make it to a jail cell. And on that note, I will say, I’m not losing any sleep after convicted murderer Semajs Short who was convicted in the shooting death of 2-year-old Dy’Unanna Anderson in 2017.

Short, who was 17 years old when he killed the young girl, was 24 at the time of his own death and was serving out a paltry 31-year sentence for his crime. He stole an entire life away from a little girl and was sentenced to only 31 years in prison… And, as Newsweek reports, “the [North Carolina Department of Public Safety] said Short was projected to be released from prison on May 7, 2042,” in only twenty more years…

Well, a group of guys in the pen for whatever reason just made certain Short will not be walking out of the prison on May 7, 2042. At the Bertie Correction Institution on Tuesday, a group of inmates attacked Short. While “first responders performed life-saving measures” and paramedics attempted to resuscitate him upon their arrival, Short was pronounced dead at the scene.

I’m not going to condone the actions of the inmates. For all I know, they are repugnant murderers and such, as well—in fact, the odds are I wouldn’t agree with the sentences they were given, either. I also don’t know what caused them to attack the guy. He’d been there a handful of years already… Perhaps he bumped into the wrong guy at lunchtime. I will, however, say that karma can be a real b*tch, and child killers deserve a death sentence in the first place.

I do hope Short repented before his death because he’s in God’s hands now, and he had a bevy of things for which to ask forgiveness.
