Sophie Cunningham did the unthinkable. She said boys who claim they're girls shouldn't play girls' sports, and that girls' should be protected from them. Her comments weren't unthinkable as far as normal people and common sense go. But unthinkable in the sense that the left and the media (but I repeat myself) think defending girls is transphobic. Plus, certain political expectations are placed on players in the WNBA, which is not a real business.

On Tuesday, Sophie told ESPN: "...love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."

You knew it was going to be all reporters wanted to ask her about. The let's-get-this-bullsh*t-over-with look of disdain in Sophie's face showed that she knew that too. They gave Cunningham every opportunity to apologize or bend the knee or say she was going to further educate herself or whatever other humiliation ritual you'd expect them to put her through.

She doubles down instead.

I said what I said, I think it’s common sense. I think I’ll always believe in that, it’s really important to protect children. And that’s little girls, who are also involved in that category. I stand by what I said and I’ll always believe that.

It's sad that such a milquetoast response gets praised. Yet, it is praiseworthy because it's so rare. Especially when you consider Sophie's day job, where her teammate Caitlyn Clark gets technical fouls for telling her opponent to "check the scoreboard." Also, where her teammate doing so is compared to lynching and racism. No, seriously.

Sophie Cunningham didn't say anything that isn't common sense to you or me or eighty percent of America. But as we've seen, while Sophie wants to protect girls like this:

Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) think the two of them are transphobic for not wanting this in their bathroom.

We'll see if Cunningham stays strong between now and it's time to buy her new sneakers for my niece's birthday. If there's one thing we've learned (see: Sweeney, Sydney), it's that the media will keep going and going and going until they get the response they are looking for.
