A man thought he was rich enough to abuse a seal. He thought wrong. He has now been arrested by federal agents and faces up to one year in jail. This is because, despite how much money he has, that does not put him above the law.
United States Attorney Ken Sorenson announced that Igor Mykhaylovych Lytvynchuk, 38, of Covington, Washington, was charged by criminal complaint on May 12, 2026, for harassing and attempting to harass an endangered Hawaiian monk seal by throwing a large rock at the sealβs head, in violation of the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Fortunately, locals do not like it when you mess with innocent animals. This is why one local did what needed to be done and punched the animal abuser.
According to the criminal complaint unsealed today, Lytvynchuk was observed and filmed on May 5, 2026 walking along the shoreline in the Lahaina area of Maui tracking the movements of a Hawaiian monk seal, known as βLani,β as she playfully pushed a floating log close to the shoreline.
The fact that the seal was playing with a log at the time of the assault makes this all the more infuriating. The poor little guy was having a good time, and some psycho came to play his sinister game. It is enraging.
According to the complaint, Lytvynchuk then picked up a large rock, took aim, and threw the rock directly at Laniβs head. The rock narrowly missed her nose, startling her, and causing her to rear up out of the water.
What was even the point of this? Did he get enjoyment from causing this much distress to an innocent seal? To call this evil would be an understatement.
Witnesses immediately confronted Lytvynchuk and told him they had contacted law enforcement, to which Lytvynchuk reportedly responded that he was βrich enough to pay the fines,β before walking away. According to witnesses, Lani remained largely immobile for an extended period of time after the incident, which caused much concern over her welfare.
Well, it turns out that he is not βrich enoughβ to evade the law. What he believed was a game to him turned out to be a felony arrest. That is because most people have this little thing called βhumanityβ and don't like it when you go and cause harm to innocent beings.
Time will tell if justice is served.
