Watch: Sam Smith invents brand new gender-neutral word because in 2023 everything is offensive
I once wrote an article for my college newspaper in which I joked that one day, the lefties would boycott the word "boycott" for its gender implication. That was in 2019. I thought it was a decent joke. I never expected anything like it to actually happen. But alas, satire has become reality, my friends.
Sam Smith appeared on BBC's The One Show and discussed their love of fishing, in between all the Satanic performances and latex glove fittings. But Smith clarified they would be a fisherthem. Not a fisherman. Because gender. Or Something.
“Sam Smith says he loves fishing and identifies as a FisherTHEM not a Fishermen but a Fisherthem 🎣🤦🏼‍♂️😑”— Oli London (@Oli London) 1676420654
Smith explained, "I love fishing! Yes, I do! Yeah I'd love to be a fisherthem!"
Smith was then misgendered by the host, who asked, "What? Like a fly fisherman?" Smith responded they'd like to be any type of fisherTHEM, thank you very much.
This is actually the third time Smith has been misgendered by BBC in the past two months. I, for one, don't understand how it could possibly keep happening. Smith is so clearly a "them". Not confusing at all to refer to a single person as multiple beings. Not even a little bit.
Smith came out as non-binary and genderqueer in 2019, when he explained to Jameela Jamil: "I've always had a little bit of a war going within my body and my mind. I do think like a woman sometimes, in my head. Sometimes I’ve questioned, ‘Do I want a sex change?’ and it’s something I still think about, like: ‘Do I want to?' But I don’t think it is. When I saw the words’ non-binary’ and ‘genderqueer’ and I read into it, and I heard this person speaking, I was like ‘F*ck, that’s me.'”
To be completely honest, I still don't understand what non-binary or genderqueer or any of the other gender spectrum terms actually mean. But I'll take this fisherthem's word for it.
