Michelle Obama blames white people for black people's hair. That's it. That's the headline.

Michelle Obama: Whites are "trapping black people" in "hair standards" that harm their capability to do work pic.twitter.com/F5S9RLugSt

Calling this a first-world issue doesn’t even begin to explain it.
According to Michelle Obama, Black women’s hair “comes out naturally in a curly pattern.” So when people like her are “straightening it to follow YOUR beauty standards,” they are “trapped by the straightness.” This is why “so many of them can’t swim” and struggle in the water, and it’s also why they avoid going to the gym—because all they are doing is “trying to keep it straight for y’all.” She added that the “braids are for y’all so they can work harder and focus on the work.” Subsequently, “white folks gotta get out of their hair.”
Look, I didn’t say it—she did. And the fact that if a white person said this it would be defined as “racist” tells you all you need to know.
I simply thought the whole “Black people can’t swim” thing was nothing more than a racist joke. I had no clue it had to do with the fact that they are straightening their hair. Incredible. You really do learn something new every day.
But jokes aside, what is she even talking about? Now it’s white people’s fault she can’t swim? That’s a bit of a stretch, if you ask me. It’s also a slap in the face to all white people struggling with curly hair, as she frames this as a “you” problem rather than a personal issue—so superficial that it’s comical a former first lady is speaking on it with such seriousness on stage.
I’m sorry that there seems to be some massive delusion where people blame others they’ve never met for their superficial issues. But again, this is such a personal matter, and to even call it an “issue” is putting it kindly.
That being said, some people’s hair is naturally curly, and the sooner people like Michelle accept that, the better off everyone will be.
