Sometimes the internet does good things. This is one of them.
An 88-year-old veteran has captured many people on social media after it was revealed that he works at a grocery store to support himself, prompting netizens to raise more than a million dollars to help fund his retirement.
According to the New York Post:
Ed Bambas, a cashier at the Meijer store in Brighton, Michigan, lost his pension 13 years ago and despite his age is now forced to work 40 hours a week — a full-time schedule — because “he doesn’t have enough income.”
“I retired from General Motors in ’99. In 2012, they went bankrupt and they took my pension away from me,” Bambas told Australian influencer Samuel Weidenhofer, according to a video posted to Instagram.
The octogenarian revealed he had been comfortable in his retirement, with a home and stable financial footing, until he was left with nothing as his beloved wife fell ill around the same time, a devastating gut-punch that drove him back to work.
He was forced to sell his home to help pay for medical bills.
Bambas admitted he has no choice but to work and has been struggling “a little bit,” while trying to reestablish himself before finally getting the job at the grocery store 45 miles west of Detroit.
His wife unfortunately passed away over seven years ago, and he has been struggling to make ends meet. But thanks to the generosity of the internet, things appear to be changing.
Weidenhofer gave Bambas a $400 tip to help him out before opening a GoFundMe that has raised over $1.275 million as of Wednesday.
While it’s wonderful news that he received this support, it makes one wonder how many more veterans are out there struggling or how many more innocent people have had their pensions taken away through no fault of their own. It truly is sad to think about, despite how amazing this story is for Ed.
According to one comment on the GoFundMe page: “My father worked for GM. He also lost everything. He was a vet in the Army. You remind me so much of him. We lost him at the age of 97. It wasn’t right what GM did to all of you after all the years you guys busted your butts for them.”
It’s truly sad how people like Ed, who work their entire lives, have to spend their last years working just to make ends meet. This is especially frustrating when the government hands out benefits like candy to people who simply don’t want to work.
May God bless Ed, his family, and everyone else with similar stories. We can’t leave our veterans behind like this, and it’s disgusting that the government does not make these people a priority. Heartbreaking, despite the very happy ending to this story.
