FLASHBACK: George H.W. Bush Hosts Dana Carvey at the White House

Corey Stallings
December 02, 2018

If you're familiar with early 90s Saturday Night Live, you'll no doubt be familiar with Dana Carvey. You know, Church Lady. Garth Algar. The Schwarzenegger wannabe, Hans. If you aren't familiar with these characters, fix that. Immediately.

Another of Carvey's more memorable characters was his caricature of the recently departed George H.W. Bush. His impression still brings the chuckles a quarter of a century later. You might think President Bush would pop a gasket over being moroutinely on national television. You'd be wrong. Quite the opposite, actually.

In fact, "Bush: Part I" loved the impression so much, he invited Carvey to the White House. Seriously, it's all on tape:

Former President George H.W. Bush chose to liven things up at his last White House Christmas party by inviting “Saturday Night Live” star Dana Carvey to bring his act to the White House and perform in front of the man he hilariously portrayed for so long.

Carvey’s antics turned what could have been a more somber affair — given that he had just lost a brutal race to his Democratic opponent, Bill Clinton — into a classic skit for the ages.

“The fact that we can laugh at each other is a very fundamental thing,” Bush Sr. said as he joined Carvey on the stage.

“Dana’s given me a lot of laughs,” he said, adding that Carvey “never crossed the line” in his portrayals.

Pardon me for just a moment.

Let's be honest, you'll never see Trump and Alec Baldwin dispensing giggles on the same podium. This kind of camaraderie between mocker and "mockee" doesn't really exist anymore. These days, mocking political figures is a partisan act, not a quest to milk the audience of their chuckles.

Those were the good ole' days when comedy still reigned supreme. People were good sports about ribbing one another. Hopefully the day will come again when American peeps can remove their funny bones from their rectums and learn to laugh with one another again.

Speaking of comedy:
