Watch: Brave Pup Fights Off Pack Of Coyotes In Suspenseful Video
California has a coyote problem, and these “opportunistic feeders” are becoming more brazen by the day. So, while it’s not unheard of to hear about the tragic death of one’s pet at the hands of these animals, that does not always happen without a fight. Fortunately, one stray pup is doing okay after spending nearly an hour fighting off a pack of several coyotes caught on a suspenseful video.

According to the New York Post:
Home security camera footage from Brea, California, showed the five ravenous coyotes skulk toward and surround the unsuspecting 1-year-old stray — a Labrador retriever-German shepherd mix, now named Duke — in the early hours earlier this month.
The pack surrounds the floppy-eared and somewhat gangly pup — nipping at his heels, sides and face, the security video shared with KTLA showed.
Exhibiting strong instincts, the pup eventually stands with his back against shrubs to prevent any more sneak attacks from the constantly circulating low-eared scavengers.
“He knew how to protect himself, and fight them off and kind of back into a corner against that little area there,” homeowner Melissa Shatynski told the outlet. “He was able to fight them off unbelievably.”
It’s unclear if the pup had a home before this encounter, but he has been taken to the humane society and is pending adoption.
“Duke is a shy but friendly boy who loves hanging out with other dogs. Once he warms up, he enjoys doing zoomies, playing in the pool, and engaging with his handlers,” OC Animal Care wrote.
Here is Duke now enjoying his time with other pups and waiting until he meets his furever owners.

This is not the first time a domesticated animal has fought off a pack of coyotes.
Last year, a cat saved her puppy companion by also fighting off several of these animals.

Coyotes are becoming increasingly less fearful, as just last week, a man had to strangle a coyote to death for 10 minutes, after claiming it was "either me or him."
