Staff of Chicago's public schools used COVID fund to tax themselves on luxurious travel

🚨Chicago public school teachers and principals were caught using COVID funds as a cover to book lavish international trips to resorts and safaris.

It all makes sense now, doesn't it?
According to a new report by the CPS watchdog, “Chicago Public Schools staff members took ‘questionable, excessive, and even exorbitant’ trips to places like South Africa, Egypt, Finland, and elsewhere — complete with wildlife safaris, a hot air balloon ride, and camel rides at the district’s,” according to Chalkbeat.
Lax oversight and an influx in federal COVID aid led to the increase in travel expenditures, which more than doubled since 2019 even as budget trouble loomed, according to the district’s Office of the Inspector General.
In January 2022, the teachers’ union voted to refuse to reopen schools under the guise of safety. They demanded that students be subjected to asinine policies, all in a fake effort to prevent the spread.
This begs the question: If these people were so worried about safety, why weren’t they worried about safety? And the fact that they used those so-called safety funds to travel—regardless of what viruses they may or may not bring back—speaks volumes about their true priorities, which are clearly not education or the students.
The watchdog also found hundreds of district and school staff traveled to a series of conferences in Las Vegas and other cities, in many cases racking up high hotel and airfare costs. When the organizer of these events put on similar professional development events in Chicago or virtually, few district employees attended.
I’m having trouble understanding how a Las Vegas trip helps educate students. Can someone please clear that up for the confused folks?
Overall, the district spent $7.7 million on staff and student travel in fiscal year 2024, compared with $3.6 million in 2019. The watchdog’s report said many trips were likely worthwhile and enriching to employees and students, but some seemed of questionable value.
What’s even crazier about this is that these same people always complain about being underfunded, despite being one of the most well-funded districts in the nation.
“Over and over, CPS employees booked trips using CPS funds without required pre-approvals, exceeded CPS spending limits on hotel rooms and airfare, and enjoyed out-of-town activities of dubious necessity or value to students — all as CPS drew closer and closer to a budget crisis,” the report said.
How do balloon rides help students become proficient in math? I get that math is considered “racist” these days, but something tells me that excuse is just a copout. Weird.
It’s truly reprehensible that these people will pretend to be all in it for the students while they go on safari tours and balloon rides across the world. Incredible, yet deeply unsurprising.
Chicago Public School students deserve much better than this. The leadership is truly lacking at this point. And the fact that they are so emboldened to allegedly abuse such funds tells you all you need to know. Pathetic. Truly pathetic.
