DC Mayor Finally Admits Her Mask Laws Are Fueling Crime
Several years ago Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser forced all residents and their grandmas to wear a face diaper in an effort to fight off an invisible threat that may or may not have caused someone to have the sniffles. The threat was so extreme you would have never known if you came across it, that's why you had to mask up. You know, just in case.
Simultaneously, in 2020, society was actually fighting two invisible threats. COVID and institutional racism.
At that time, Bowser, as well as many other Democrats, came up with a brilliant solution. Why not kill two birds with one stone?
According to the Washington Examiner, the D.C. City Council was worried about a resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan, so they passed an anti-mask law over 40 years ago. However, racism came back in full force in 2020 and so the City Council decided to repeal that law to protect blacks from racist police as well as COVID.
All it would take was just an itty bitty bit of thinking to realize that criminals may exploit this law and use it to conceal their identities when committing crimes. But it seems that there is not much thinking going on in D.C., clearly.
Bowser finally decided to use her excuse of a brain and now wants to restore the anti-mask law due to the crime wave sweeping our nation's capital.
Just this Monday, we reported about the dystopian reality of a CVS pharmacy in Washington DC that has placed framed photographs on its shelves showing a range of items they have available. Due to the crime wave, you press the button and the sales associate gets you what you need.
Compared to this time last year, homicides are up 37 percent. Robberies are up 66 percent. Auto thefts are up 106 percent with 5,343 year-to-date, and carjackings are just as bad, being up 108 percent with 745 year-to-date.
According to the Examiner, D.C.’s 1982 anti-mask law only banned masking with the intent to break the law. Bowser’s proposal would make wearing a mask while committing a crime an additional charge on top of any other charges.
“This legislation reflects what our community is telling us: they want appropriate accountability for those who choose to commit crimes and inflict fear in our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Bowser. “At a time when we’re dealing with historically low staffing levels at MPD, we’re making common-sense changes that recognize the day-to-day operational challenges our officers experience and that will better support safe and effective policing.”
What exactly is "safe and effective" policing? Because it seems there is not much "policing" or "safety" going on over there.
Also, do you think that telling people the police are so racist to the point that black people have to wear a mask, may have contributed to historically low staffing in the police department? Maybe just a little bit, right?
One thing is for sure, progressives will never admit wrong no matter how many times they eat their own words.
Even five-year-olds could have told you that masks embolden criminals. Kids wear masks while Trick or Treating to literally disguise their identity. And somehow lawmakers in our nation's capital could not figure that out.
But a little too late since this will not really do much to crack down on crimes since juveniles don’t get anything more than a slap on the wrist.
If someone is under 18, they cannot be held in jail beyond their 21st birthday. Subsequently, even juvenile murderers have avoided significant jail time in DC, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
Progressives are not too good at much of anything. But it really is not that difficult. There is one very effective way that will prevent crime that has been used all around the world for some time now.
As long as you prosecute and punish people for committing crimes, you get less of it.
But at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if D.C. officials never figured out that very obvious fact.
