Ben Sasse is making media rounds to promote his new book on tribalism titled Them: Why We Hate Each Other. While on MSNBC, Sasse pointed out how Donald Trump plays the media like Johnny played his fiddle against the devil. Funny, considering MSNBC is Trump's favorite fiddle. Here:

The president is a good marketer and understands how to drive news cycles like nobody else in U.S. history has.

Right now there is no 70% conversation and I think the president is pretty good at puppet mastering, getting the news media having a new frenzy. That doesn’t help us.

What doesn't help is media falling for Trump's game. Every single time. Media faced a challenge in covering Trump during the election. Instead of covering him or other candidates fairly, or even remotely fairly, media went all in on the Trump primary election circus. Drooling over themselves whenever Trump uttered a single syllable. Because Trump = ratings. Now media is upset when President Trump utters a single syllable and news covers it. In common parlance, we'd describe this conundrum as "sleeping in the bed you dirty whores made."

Complain all you want about the president "turning the American people against the press." The media did that on their own.
