Watch: The Baltimore bridge collapse is another example of how the U.S. is one domino away from chaos
The Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed in Baltimore after a collision with a container ship that crashed into the structure. Here is what we know so far and why we cannot ignore the fact that the United States has far too many infrastructure issues.
The crew of a massive container ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday warned of power issues before the collision, which caused the bridge to collapse into the frigid Patapsco River, officials said.
At least six people believed to be part of a construction crew that was repairing potholes on the bridge remain unaccounted for, Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld said at a news conference Tuesday.
Two people have been pulled from the Patapsco River, Baltimore City Fire Department Chief James Wallace said.
One of them was not injured and the other was taken to a local trauma center in “very serious condition,” he said.
The ship, which hit the bridge just before 1:30 a.m., was the DALI, a Singaporean-flagged container vessel, public affairs officer for the US Coast Guard’s 5th District, Kimberly Reaves, said. It is about 984-feet long, according to ship-tracking website MarineTraffic.
Multiple agencies are investigating the crash, though there is currently “absolutely no indication that it was intentional,” Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said Tuesday morning.
Nationwide, about 222,000 bridges need to be replaced. However, officials claimed that the Baltimore Bridge was “up to code.”
"We have infrastructure issues in the United States that have been created by your government, who then say 'hey give us more money' so that they can fix the issues that they helped create," Crowder said. "When you think about the government you obviously don't think about efficiency."
For example, thousands of solar panels were damaged by hail in Texas. And now, residents are worried about the chemicals that may leak into the air and/or water. Basically, because the government decided to install this extremely inefficient energy product, and because they are so incompetent they did not think about the possibility of this little thing called hail, we get an enormous amount of money being thrown down the drain with possible environmental impacts. So much for being “green energy.”
"So what is the solution? According to President Joe Biden, more solar panels,” Crowder said.
The Biden administration wants to use millions of acres of public land to build a utility-scale solar development project.
And ironically, China makes nearly 80 percent of all solar panels.
More autonomous vehicles (CAVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) are hitting the market and there is a concern of hackers attacking these vehicles. There are also reports that 90 percent of long-haul trucking may transition to self-driving soon.
"Imagine what could happen here in the United States if you talk about infrastructure and not address these issues, what kind of huge attack could we have?" Crowder said. "We are designing a system where sh*t can hit the fan."
