Zohran Mamdani has announced his city-run grocery store initiative. The price tag is not what you would call “cheap.” This is why it is fair to ask: Why not spend those millions and millions of dollars on well-established food programs, rather than funneling it around for a pilot program that seems to fail every time it is tried? Mamdani has no answer for this.

According to the Mamdani Administration, “Grocery costs have risen 33% nationwide since 2019.” This is why he believes the municipal grocery stores should offer all food staples at a 30% discount compared to market rate.

When a reporter asked why not spend all that time and effort into food programs already in existence, he claimed the city sees an opportunity to waste more money. (I am paraphrasing for brevity here).

Yeah -- methinks it is not going to work out....

Per the Gov:

Today, Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su and New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) announced that a core basket of everyday groceries will be 30 percent cheaper at the five new municipal grocery stores. The basket will include all fresh produce, meat and seafood, along with roughly 20 additional categories of pantry staples, dairy and refrigerated goods. The discount will apply to all regardless of income, with prices locked in and predictable rather than fluctuating week to week as is the case at private grocers. Combined, the savings are projected to cut New Yorkers’ average grocery bill by 15 percent, about $90 a month, or roughly $1,000 a year.

It is both naive and negligent for the city to get away with such an asinine idea. While it is great, in theory, to try to make groceries affordable for all New Yorkers, this is never how these things work out.

Weird how when the government tries to control pricing, they end up with nothing to show for it. Why do you think that is?

While it would not be surprising if this never comes to fruition, and millions will be wasted by the city pretending to study such a concept that will never work, residents deserve more than fake promises of affordable prices when it is their leftist policies that create unaffordability in the first place.
