Of course, the director of Disney's "The Marvels" is blaming her movie tanking on you being a sexist bigot
Disney's all-girl comicbook flick The Marvels has tanked at the box office. There are any number of reasons why this is so, but if you ask the director of the movie, the key reason why is YOU. You're too much of a sexist bigot to enjoy her movie. As we've seen since the Girl Ghostbuster movie that bombed so badly, it tanked the franchise -- the Girl Ghostbusters franchise, the real Ghostbusters are still solid -- it's never the fault of the movie looking stupid.
Which The Marvels did. And I say this as someone who enjoyed the Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel graphic novels, both written by raging leftists I'm sure don't appreciate being mentioned on the Louder with Crowder Dot Com website.
In the case of The Marvels, the movie looked so bad a desperate Disney recut the final trailer to add men to it.
It didn't work.
Director Nia DaCosta told Variety that she ignored the haters and made a $250 million movie fo a niche audience. And when no one outside that niche came to see it?
...there are pockets that are really virulent and violent and racist — and sexist and homophobic and all those awful things. And I choose the side of the light. That’s the part of fandom I’m most attracted to.
Set aside that much like the WNBA, not even women are turning up to see this tribute to SHEros and girl boss power. When you tell a group of people that something is not for them (aka men), you don't then get to turn around and blame people for not spending money on the product you claimed is not for them. It's not because of racist and sexist homophobia that these movies are tanking. It's because companies like Disney expect people to turn out for sh*tty movies, and people are both saying no and resenting being told it's about -isms and -phobias.
They even started selling "Not Everything Is For You" t-shirts after backlash to the She-Hulk show on Disney+. M'kay.
People aren't rejecting "diversity" or "inclusion." They are rejecting lazy storytelling. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse CRUSHED at the box office. And you had a white Spider-Man, a black Spider-Man, a Latino Spider-Man, a Hindu Spider-Man, and a Spider-Girl that may or may not have been trans. It also had intriguing characters and a compelling story. It made over $690 million at the box office. Go figure.
Do I personally care at the end of the day? No. If Disney goes broke getting woke, I'm not a shareholder. It's not my money the company is setting on fire. If the company wants to give filmmakers $250 million to make movies that target such tiny audiences that it doesn't even appeal to the demographics it's being made for, that's between them and any class-action lawsuits from investors.
But you don't get to lecture people about your art and then get upset those people don't give you money for your art. Be intellectually honest enough to admit, "Yeah, we missed the target on this one."
