Utah House Bill 114 would criminalize adult-oriented performances in the presence of a minor. This should not be controversial, as any sensible person can understand the logic behind this. For some reason, though, drag performers are fighting against this and have demanded the right to perform in front of children.
A group of drag performers has stormed the Utah State Capitol, claiming this bill criminalizes what they do. However, if what they do is adult-oriented performances in the presence of a minor, then yes, it would, in fact, criminalize that. Why they have a problem with this is beyond reason, but logic and inappropriate behavior don't tend to go hand in hand.
According to Fox 13:
The protesters were opposed to House Bill 114 sponsored by Rep. Colin Jack, R-St. George, which criminalizes adult-oriented performances that are performed in the presence of a minor.
"This could literally affect all of us," Divina 2.0 told FOX 13 News in an interview. "Being in drag, being here today in the presence of minors, if there’s a minor here? It could be a felony. Also walking to our cars in drag. This also — on the grander scheme of things — affects our Pride festival which is one of the most beautiful things we do in Utah that’s a family oriented, inclusive experience. So this extends beyond what we do for our jobs and entertainment and things like this."
No, that is not how these things work. They would not be criminalized for simply walking on state property so long as they are fully clothed and are not proactively performing. While many people don't want to see them dressed like that, it is still well within their rights, and it's naive to claim otherwise. In fact, the fight to ensure this bill does not pass makes their protest suspicious, as they demand the right to perform in front of minors.
On Wednesday, Rep. Jack insisted his bill was a simple code cleanup for Utah's lewdness statutes requested by the Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice and he was not targeting drag performances.
Again, this should not be controversial. It does not even appear to be about them. Why they are creating a problem where one does not exist remains unclear.
Why the left fights to ensure children are exposed to these deranged and misogynistic behaviors will never fully be understood. You can draw your conclusions as to why they believe this is a fight worth fighting. However, if I did not know any better, I would call this a deranged attempt from these “performers” to groom the next generation. But I do know better, so I will say that.
