San Francisco Bakery Refuses Service To Police in Uniform
A bakery located in San Francisco is refusing service to armed law enforcement officers in uniform, according to the San Francisco Police Officers Association.
The union is claiming that Reem’s California refused to serve an officer last weekend as part of its policy that says the bakery chain will not serve anyone who is armed and in uniform.
“NO COPS ALLOWED. That’s the confirmed policy of the bakery chain Reem’s. One of our officers was denied service last weekend because he was in uniform. Reem’s confirms that they will not serve anyone armed and in uniform. Presumably, this includes members of the US Military,” the union wrote on X.
The union included a screenshot of an email from the company confirming the policy.
“At Reem’s we do have a policy to not serve anyone that is armed in a uniform. All officers are welcome to come to our establishment when they are off duty and not armed,” it read.
Reem’s told SFGATE that its policy is meant to ensure the safety of its employees by keeping guns out of its stores.
“We are not asking Reem’s or any business with a bigoted policy to serve our officers. We’re asking them to own their discriminatory policy & and put up a sign so we know not to spend money in your establishment—on or off duty. We took the liberty of designing one for them.”
The proposed sign states “NO ENTRY. NO COPS ALLOWED. HAVE A NICE DAY.”
The funny part about all of this is that the bakery is worried that having armed police officers around will jeopardize the safety of its employees yet they do not seem to be worried about the fact that rampant criminal activity and pervasive drug use have forced businesses out of town.
San Francisco businesses have a long history of denying services to officers. Just this year a cashier at Pizza Squared was fired after he told officers they were not welcome. In 2021, owners from Hilda and Jesse on Union Street apologized amid backlash after three police officers were denied service.
Practically half of the stores in San Francisco's downtown shopping district have closed since 2019, the San Francisco Standard reported in May. But it is the police who are the real problem here.
