\According to Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, just because someone has committed over six crimes doesn’t erase the fact that they may have had a tough upbringing. You know—because terrorizing people isn’t really the problem, it’s just about getting to the “root cause” of why someone’s a scumbag. Nonetheless, he said what he said, and there’s no better representation of the soft-on-crime experiment than that.
I’m not a criminal expert, but it would seem that announcing to the world that someone might get a slap on the wrist for their first ten crimes—just by claiming they had an unhappy childhood—does nothing to prevent crime. But again, I’m no expert. Nonetheless, this approach is more of an insult than the fake compassion he thinks it is.
Firstly, he claims this approach makes people safe, when all it really does is announce to criminals that they’re free to commit crimes. Secondly, it’s disingenuous and deranged—especially considering that countless people with poor upbringings, abuse, or hunger as children went on to become wonderful, law-abiding adults. To claim that being poor or disadvantaged correlates with criminal behavior is reprehensible. Thirdly, it contradicts the fact that there’s this little thing called free will, which is exactly why people need to be held accountable.
Committing crimes is a choice—but it’s not a choice for the victim. So by justifying people’s poor actions, all this does is create more victims and terrorize Americans, while doing nothing for actual safety.
Since when did city officials start feeling the need to defend criminals? I highly doubt they’d feel the same way if the crime were committed against them or their family—but that’s neither here nor there.
Why does it feel like once-great American cities always fall to these progressive movements? It’s unclear, but this is certainly the fastest way to destroy a once-great nation. Subsequently, everyone should do exactly the opposite of what he’s advocating.
