The Palestinian government is a thing, in case you didn’t know. Their legitimacy and ethics may be questionable, but they exist. Palestine has been a longtime leftist favorite, like gun control or abortion. So leftists will be pleased to know the “state” is embracing progress. By beginning to wonder if women should maybe have some rights.
Palestinian activists and human rights organizations welcomed on Monday measures by the government to give more rights to women. The changes include the right of Palestinian women to pass on their citizenship to their children and to open bank accounts in their names.
The Cabinet also recommended to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas a series of legal amendments that include canceling or amending laws that allow rapists to avoid punishment by marrying their victims.
The Palestinian government also recommended changes to the 1960 penal code, which allowed for lower punishment for acts of violence carried out in so-called “honor crimes.”
Their recent achievements in equality are as follows: women can now open bank accounts. Finally, a woman can have a place to stash the inheritance her father will likely keep from her. It’ll also act as an emergency financial cushion should her divorce request be approved by the patriarchy. Filled with all the money she didn’t earn because her husband forbade her from working. Goodie.
Also, Palestinian women soon may no longer be subjected to marrying their rapists. It’s up in the air right now though. Depends on what kind of mood Mahmoud is in when he ponders how much freedom to grace the ladyfolk with. No promises.
Maybe in another 200 years Palestine will be approaching women’s suffrage. Perhaps women will even, dare I say it, have the right to protect themselves from Islamic sexism. A good way to end honor killings is letting gals carry gats. But hey, what do I know, I am but a lowly woman myself.
Make no mistake, Palestine is one of the left’s biggest mascots. A sexist culture which takes delight in oppressing women. Meanwhile, pro-woman Israel is shunned like Rosie O’Donnell at a singles bar. Or just anywhere in public.
