Watch: Fact-checking "comedian" John Oliver's anti-JD Vance rant

John Oliver decided to aim at Vice President JD Vance. Today’s show fact-checks what he said.
According to Oliver, Vance is a racist and promotes racist content online, specifically referencing that Vance spread the rumor that Haitians were eating pets in Springfield, Ohio.
“It was not just about the dogs and the cats; Haitian migrants did ruin that town. It overwhelmed Springfield, Ohio, and the residents were rightfully concerned,” Crowder said.
With a town of 60,000 residents, adding 20,000 Haitians does not do them any favors. This overwhelmed the system, including the schools, especially because the kids did not speak English. There were also plenty of 911 calls claiming migrants were eating ducks in the park.
“The media does not want to actually do investigative work or fact-check whether it is true or false, or dive into the 911 calls. They just want to tell you that was a lie when that was not the issue,” Crowder said. “The issue was about migrants taking over towns in the United States and displacing Americans — putting them out of work, ruining their schools, skyrocketing crimes — all of that is observable.”
Oliver also claimed that Vance blamed migrants for bankrupting hospitals, and that illegal aliens are competing with Americans for housing, adding that Vance claimed illegal immigration is one of the driving factors in increasing housing costs.
“John Oliver is so lazy he does not actually develop new arguments,” Crowder said. “More than half of both legal and illegal immigrants use at least one of the welfare programs.”
The cost to taxpayers is up to $451 billion a year. In one specific instance, in 2025, illegal immigrants cost Texas hospitals alone $1 Billion.
Oliver would like it if you believed this was “soundly debunked,” but his “evidence” is one biased, misleading headline, while the numbers and data tell a different story.
“He wants to tell you what to think. He doesn't want you to think or encourage you to learn how to think,” Crowder said.
